To Jen Fisher, hospitals are made for sick people. She doesn’t consider pregnancy to be a medical ailment — but sees it as a natural part of womanhood.

Photo courtesy of Krysten Bullock / kbullock@postregister – Natalie Taylor, right, stands by Brittany Chavez’s side during her labor at Mountain View Hospital in Idaho Falls on Sept. 12. Taylor has a master’s degree-level education in nursing and midwifery. This was Chavez’s third pregnancy.

That’s why the Victor woman opted to use a midwife and deliver in her own home when she gave birth to her second child, Avery Boirch.

“I didn’t want to have my children in a hospital unless we needed to be there,” said Fisher, 42.

But not all midwives will deliver babies at home. Many, such as Susan Binegar and Natalie Taylor at Rosemark Women Care Specialists, will only deliver children in a hospital.

Binegar and Taylor, who each have master’s degree-level educations in nursing and midwifery, deliver babies at Mountain View Hospital.

About 30 of the approximately 110 babies born each month at Mountain View Hospital are delivered using a midwife, Taylor said.

Many mothers who’ve used midwives in delivery said they appreciated having midwives spend more time with them during appointments to explain developments in their pregnancy.

Midwifery also uses alternative forms of pain relief to ease delivery. Some options include using a jet-tub for relaxation, sitting on an exercise ball and using different types of pressure points to ease pain.

But money-saving typically isn’t a reason for mothers to choose the midwife option. Taylor said ultrasounds and other services from a midwife generally cost the same as if the patient had gone to a doctor.

Emily Nichols, 32, of Tetonia used a midwife to deliver both of her children, Ida and Hazel, at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg.

Nichols said her midwife took time to discuss her health and options with her.

“I felt like I spent a lot of time with my midwife discussing options and care throughout pregnancy as well as birth options,” she said. “I felt really well-informed and ready, and I really liked that.”

Fisher said one of things she appreciated most was her midwife taking the time to get to know her.

“You’re not just a number to them,” Fisher said, adding that most of her prenatal appointments lasted an hour. “Knowing my midwife was going to spend as much time with me as I needed was reassuring. I knew who was going to be birthing my baby. It felt personal, and they almost become part of the family.”

When Eden Gunter of Shelley elected to use a midwife in three of her four pregnancies, she said many people immediately thought it meant she was going to have a home birth. But Gunter gave birth at Mountain View Hospital.

“A lot of people asked about what if I have complications, but I told them if there were (complications) I could bring in the on-call doctors,” Gunter, 30, said. “For a low-risk pregnancy, it was the way to go. It made it a lot smoother and easier for me.”

Physicians are often called in if complications arise in birth or if intervention becomes necessary for the health of the child or the mother.

In addition to using Binegar during pregnancies and births, Gunter also visits Binegar for her annual exams and other women’s health issues.

“A lot of women’s health issues can be from earlier pregnancies, and by using (Binegar) she already knew that information and we had a relationship,” she said.

Kelly Chircop, 34, of Driggs also used a midwife to deliver her two sons.

“Midwives’ outlook on birth is that it’s a more emotional thing and not just a medical thing,” Chircop said. “It happens; it’s beautiful. It’s this thing we all do and it’s natural.”

Rigby resident Kylee Smith thought she’d be getting ready for another day of work at Snake River Oncology on Wednesday morning.

Only 38 weeks into her pregnancy, her baby – due Dec. 30 – had other ideas.

Baby Smith had some pretty perfect timing.

After about six hours of labor, the baby girl, named Kinzlee, was born at 12:12 p.m. Wednesday, or 12-12-12, at Mountain View Hospital. Smith’s water broke at 5 a.m., and she was admitted to the hospital around 6 a.m.

With a full head of brown hair and weighing in at 5 pounds 6 ounces, Kinzlee is the firstborn child of Smith and her husband, Dallas.

“I was really nervous at first,” Kylee Smith said, “but as soon as we got to the hospital, it just put my fears at ease. All of the nurses were great. My doctor was great.

“We had a fun delivery, and it actually ended up being a good time.”

Dallas Smith said Kinzlee’s arrival was the best early Christmas present he could ask for.

“We’re just really excited, really happy that she came before Christmas,” he said. “We’ll be able to have her at home and enjoy our first Christmas as a family. It was definitely a good surprise.”

Despite the early arrival, hospital spokeswoman Chelsey Anderson said mom and baby are happy and healthy.

Kylee Smith said she expected to be able to take Kinzlee home today or Friday.

“We’ve had some unique birth times before where patients have been induced, but never has it happened where the baby was actually and naturally born right at something like 12:12 pm on 12-12-12,” Anderson said. “That’s just really special.”

The numbers won’t align like that again until Jan. 1, 2101, or 1-1-01.

Two other mothers at the hospital were in labor and expected to give birth to boys Wednesday.

The hospital delivers about 100 babies a month, Anderson said.

“I haven’t been doing too much Facebooking yet,” Kylee Smith said, “but we’ve called friends and family to let them know. We’ve just enjoyed having her here with us.”
